Ben Challumlr (1025m, Munro) – Calum’s hill

This expansive lump of a hill looks bland and grassy from Strath Fillan but its S Top conceals an interesting craggy summit ridge and aspect overlooking the head of Glen Lochy.

Start from the lay-by on the SW side of the A82 at NN356280, opposite the turning for Kirkton Farm. Cross the road and follow the track to the Farm, joining the WHW. Turn left in front of the farm buildings to reach the crossroads between the Priory ruins and an old graveyard.

Leave the WHW and head N on the trackex uphill to cross the railway at a level crossing, NN3610728797. Turn NE and follow the edge of the forested area, over a stile into the plantation then over another stile to emerge on to the open hillside. Continue NE up to the S Top at 997mlr alt. A line of fence posts may be followed for much of the way.

Descend steeply W at first to gain the true crest of the ridge at the head of a narrow defile. Follow the ridge down N to the col and continue N up to the summit of Beinn Challuim.

*Return by outward route. *A longer but more interesting return route descends the NW ridge of Beinn Challuimex to Bealach Ghlas Leathaid. Continue NW into Coreheynan, much of which is now occupied by a fenced plantation. Follow the fence around the N side of the plantation to reach a path leading to the head of a trackex at NN368332.

Head S down the track, under the railway bridge, to reach the WHW at Auchtertyre. Turn SE and follow the WHW to Kirkton Farm and rejoin the outward route back to the start.

Route -
Maps LR41 and EX392 Glen Nevis
Dun Deardail, a late prehistoric or early historic vitrified hill fort, is a well-known feature in Glen
Nevis. The approach described below follows the routes of known footpaths at risk of extinction due to clear-felling or over-growth, which recently have been re-cairned and cleared by local people.

Park where convenient in the vicinity of the Glen Nevis Restaurant, NN126720 or the Youth
Hostel, NN127717. Head WSW on the track behind the restaurant to reach the forest road. Turn S and follow it for 550m. At NN1249971278, fork right onto a 2-metre temporary track leading up across a clear-felled area. Follow it to a dip, beyond which a cairn marks the course of the original path.

Follow this uphill until it is obliterated by a harvester track. Continue S uphill on the
harvester track to reach the WHW at NN1242970659. Follow this SW for 200m only to a cairn at NN1267870824 and take the path which zig-zags S up the clear-felled hillside. It crosses the WHW at NN1261670723 and continues SW up through pleasant mixed deciduous woodland.

Meeting the WHW once more turn S and follow the forest road up for 200m to the start of the path up to Dun Deardail, marked by an information panel. Head E and reach the Fort after a further 850m. Return by the same route or more simply but longer, *follow the WHW all the way back.

Sgor Eilde Beag (956m, Munro Top) – little peak of the hind

Binnein Mor S Top (1062m, Munro Top)

Binnein Mor (1130m, Munro)— large peak

Na Gruagaichean (1055m, Munro) — the maidens

Binnein Mor is the highest peak in the Mamores, surrounded by fine ridges and deep corries. Na Gruagaichean rises steeply above Kinlochleven, dominating the scene. It has rocky twin peaks.

Park at the Grey Mare’s Tail car park NN187622. Follow the path that leads to the Waterfall for approximately 200m. At a junction, NN1877562353, keep right and shortly after fork left across a burn.

Climb the path heading NE through trees on a ridge. Emerging from the trees, follow the path across the slopes of An Cumhann to reach the Loch Eilde Mor track. Turn left on to the track for 50m only then continue NE on the path up towards Coire an Lochain.

The path curves N and levels out at 760m alt. Locate the start of a narrow pathex at NN2223964985 and follow it up, SW at first, soon turning NNE and zig-zagging up the spur of Sgor Eilde Beag to its summit. Descend NW a little then climb to the S Top of Binnein Mor. The main summit lies 700m N of here along a fine ridge. Return to the *Top, descend SW, then climb to the main summit of Na Gruagaichean.

The other maiden may be bagged easily from here and descent made into Coire na Ba**.

Alternatively, return to the main summit and traverse its long S spur until the ground steepens at its nose, Leachd na h-Aire, 880 alt. Turn WSW an descend steeply to reach the track at the elbow where it crosses the Allt Coire na Ba.

Follow the track S to Mamore Lodge and head down its steep approach drive. 70m beyond the Lodge at a bend, NN1869762931, a pathex leads SE down to a bridge across the Allt Coire na Ba and continues S, zig-zagging steeply down to join the outward route back to the CP

*An easier return route omits Na Gruagaichean. From the S Top, descend SE along the rim of the corrie. Before reaching the shallow col, locate the head of a path at NN2159765395 which zig-zags down into the corrie and NE to a junction over-looking the splendid lochans of Coire an Lochain. Take the path S and soon re-join the outward route back to the start.

Glen Nevis Mullach nan Coirean (939m, Munro) – summit of the corries

Mullach nan Coirean SE Top (917m, Munro Top)

Stob Ban (999m, Munro) – white peak A spectacular excursion with splendid views of Glen Nevis, fine ridges and a descent into a magnificent corrie.

Start from Achriabhach at the Lower Falls CP, NN145683. Head W along the road for about 300m and turn left on to the forest road. Almost immediately fork left on to a footpath rising beside the Allt a’Choire Dheirg and rejoin the forest road at the hairpin bend at NN140680.

Turn right, follow the road up to a WP at NN1349568453 and turn left on to a footpath that climbs S up through an area of clear-felled forest. The path continues over a stile at NN1326568139 on to the open hillside.

Head up SE to reach the foot of the NE ridge of Mullach nan Coirean and follow it to the summit. *Follow the main Mamore Ridge SE to the Top, 917m, and continue E to a prominent col, 846mex. Climb up the ridge ahead, which curves S and rises steeply to the summit of Stob Bàn.

**Leave the summit and head SW for 50m only and locate a cairn that marks the path heading E. Follow the path down to the col at the head of Coire a’ Mhusgain. At NN156653, locate the path leading N into the corrie, and follow it down to Achriabhach.

*An alternative route omits the SE Top and Stob Ban. From the summit of Mullach nan Coirean, descend SW along a broad ridge, then up to the summit of Meall a’ Chaorainn, 910m. Descend its N ridge and join the WHW, heading NE.

At NN1242970659, leave the WHW and follow the footpath NE down through the forest, cross the forest road at NN1261670723 and continue on the path NE down clear-felled land to re-join the forest road. Follow this NW for 200m only, branching right at the cairn at NN1256170958.

Follow the harvester track down N to reach the lowest forest road. Turn S and follow it back to Achriabhach.

**An alternative descent from the summit of Stob Ban follows its N ridge. Retrace steps and make for a small summit at 912mex. Continue N along a narrow rocky ridge which becomes broader and less steep after an easy but exposed scramble down. A path appears, which leads over the nose, turning NW to avoid crags and zig-zags down to Achriabhach.
