An unusual approach to Ben Starav explores the seldom-visited area to its S by climbing its longest ridge. The SE ridge curves S over two Munro Tops and finally W, plunging into Loch Etive.
Start at the Coileitir Farm track, NN136468, where limited parking is available. Head E on the track, cross the River Etive and follow it SW, past Coileitir and cross the Allt nam Meirleach on the
footbridge. *Turn right and follow the path past Kinlochetive and continue along the shore for about 3.5km. Where convenient, head S diagonally up the slope aiming to cross the Allt Coire na
Larach** at 150m alt, NN1052241648, to reach the foot of the Stob an Duine Ruaidh ridge. Climb SE up the ridge, curving ENE to its summit. Descend NE to a col 852mex and continue up to the
summit of Meall Cruidh. Onwards, the ridge curves N then NW to reach the summits of Stob Coire Dheirg and Ben Starav. Return to Stob Coire Dheirg and head NE along the ridge. Descend E to
the col at 766mlr***. Descend SE across the slope, past a group of lochansex on a spur, to reach the col at the foot of the N ridge of Beinn nan Aighenan. Climb the ridge to its summit. Return to the
foot of the N ridge and climb back up to the 766mlr col. Head down N on the path along the W side of the Allt nam Meirleach to rejoin the outward route at the bridge and return to the start.
*For a shorter day, the summit of Ben Starav may be reached by the most popular route, up its N
ridge. In this case, turn left after the Allt nam Meirleach bridge.
**An alternative, but shorter and steeper route to Ben Starav climbs its SW ridge. In this case,
instead crossing the Allt Coire na Larach, turn NE and climb directly to the summit.
***Whichever route is chosen, omitting Beinn nan Aighenan saves 4.5km and 483m ascent.
23km, 1685m ascent
*16km, 1559m ascent
**20km, 1579m ascent
